On July 8, 2007, the San Diego Padres and Genentech hosted the second annual "Strike Out Cancer Day" at PETCO Park. As part of the program, Genentech donated $10,000 plus $200 for every strikeout pitched by the Padres. To date, the program has raised a total of $23,000 to benefit the Cindy Matters Fund, the Padres' charity for fighting children's cancer.
A home plate ceremony took place on the field to honor local cancer survivors, led by Baseball Hall of Famer and Strike Out Cancer national spokesperson Paul Molitor. Padres manager Buddy Black, local leukemia survivor Audrey Cranmer and the family of Cindy Matters, for whom the Padres' organization is named, took the field together. Rick Kurner, a seven-year non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patient, joined the ceremony and threw out the first pitch.
During the game, local representatives of Strike Out Cancer partners distributed educational materials to fans in the stadium.
